What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, ends the month of Ramadan. It falls on the first day of Shawwal and is celebrated for one to three days depending on the country. Fasting on the day of Eid is not allowed.
Before the Eid prayer every Muslim who is able gives Zakat al-Fitr, a charity that purifies the fast and lets the poor share in the joy of Eid. The amount is announced each year by local Islamic authorities.
How it is observed
- The Eid prayer in congregation in the morning after sunrise; local mosques announce the exact time.
- Giving Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer.
- Bathing (ghusl), wearing one's best clothes and eating something sweet before going to the prayer.
- Saying the Eid takbir on the way to the mosque.
- Greeting with "Eid Mubarak", visiting parents, relatives and neighbours.
- After Eid: fasting six days of Shawwal – whoever fasts Ramadan and six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year (Muslim).
