Ashura 2027
10 Muharram · Day of Ashura
Tuesday, 15 June 2027
The tenth of Muharram, the day Allah saved Musa (Moses), and a day of fasting.
What is Ashura?
Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina he found the Jews fasting on this day, the day Allah saved Musa and his people from Pharaoh. He said, "We are closer to Musa than you," fasted it and told the Muslims to fast it (Bukhari and Muslim).
About fasting on Ashura the Prophet ﷺ said that he hoped Allah would expiate for it the sins of the previous year (Muslim). It is recommended to fast the ninth of Muharram (Tasu'a) as well.
On the tenth of Muharram in 61 AH, Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, was martyred at Karbala, and Muslims also remember the day for this event.
How it is observed
- Fasting on Ashura, together with the day before (9 Muharram) or the day after.
- Supplication, remembrance of Allah and charity.
- In Bosnia and the Balkans families cook ashura, a sweet dish of wheat, walnuts and dried fruit, and share it with neighbours.
