Islamic New Year 2027
1 Muharram · Hijri New Year
Sunday, 6 June 2027
The first day of Muharram and the start of a new year of the Islamic calendar.
What is Islamic New Year?
The Islamic New Year begins on the first day of Muharram. The Islamic calendar counts the years from the Hijra – the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the first Muslims from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. The count was introduced by the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, who chose the Hijra because it marked the beginning of the Muslim community in Medina.
The Hijri year is lunar, with 354 or 355 days, so every Islamic date comes about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur'an (At-Tawbah 9:36).
How it is observed
- There are no special rites for the new year; it is a time to reflect on the past year and make good intentions for the next.
- The Prophet ﷺ said that the best fasting after Ramadan is in Allah's month of Muharram (Muslim).
- The tenth of Muharram is Ashura, a day of fasting (see the Ashura page).
- Remember the lessons of the Hijra: patience, trust in Allah and the brotherhood of the Muhajirun and Ansar.
