The night of the middle of Sha'ban, a night of forgiveness and preparation for Ramadan.

What is Laylat al-Bara'at?

Laylat al-Bara'at is the night before the fifteenth of Sha'ban. Bara'a means release – release from sin. It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said Allah looks at His creation on the night of the middle of Sha'ban and forgives all of them except one who associates partners with Him and one who holds a grudge (Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban).

Sha'ban is the month in which the Prophet ﷺ fasted most outside Ramadan, preparing for the month of fasting, which begins about two weeks after this night.

How it is observed

  • Seeking forgiveness, supplication and night prayer.
  • Reconciling with those we have quarrelled with – the condition for forgiveness in the narration.
  • Many fast on the fifteenth of Sha'ban; it is also one of the "white days" (13th–15th) on which the Prophet ﷺ fasted.
