What is zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: a Muslim whose wealth reaches the nisab and stays above it for a full lunar year gives 2.5% (one fortieth) of it to those Allah ﷻ named in the Qur'an. It purifies the wealth and is a right of the poor in it, not a favour.

Nisab: gold or silver?

The Prophet ﷺ set the nisab at 20 mithqal of gold or 200 dirhams of silver. In grams this is about 85 g of gold (some count 80.18 g or 91.6 g, by different weights of the mithqal) and 595 g of silver (612.36 g in Hanafi practice in South Asia). Because silver is much cheaper, the silver nisab is several times lower. Hanafi scholars take the lower, as it is better for the poor; many contemporary institutions take gold for money. The table shows the nisab today in your currency.

What is zakat given on?

Cash and bank savings · gold and silver · shares and funds · goods bought for resale · money owed to you that will be repaid · cryptocurrencies.

Not on: the home you live in, your car, furniture, clothes, tools of your trade, or anything for personal use.

Jewellery

In the Hanafi school zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery, even when it is worn. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools do not count jewellery worn in a normal way; jewellery kept as savings is counted by all. Choose your school above.

Debts

Debts and instalments that are due and still unpaid on the day of calculation are deducted from zakatable wealth. A long-term loan (a mortgage, a car loan) is not deducted as a whole; some contemporary scholars also deduct the instalments due in the next 12 months.

The zakat year

Zakat is due when the wealth has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar (hijri) year. Most people choose a fixed date, such as a day in Ramadan, and calculate every year on that day. Whoever counts a solar year gives 2.577% instead of 2.5%.

Who receives zakat?

Allah ﷻ named eight groups in the Qur'an (9:60): the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be won, freeing captives, people in debt, in the way of Allah, and the stranded traveller. Zakat is not given to one's own parents and children, nor by a husband to his wife.

Frequently asked questions

How much zakat do I pay?

2.5% (one fortieth) of all zakatable wealth, once a year, if the total is at or above the nisab.

What is the nisab today?

It depends on the price of gold and silver, which this page updates automatically. Choose a standard above to see the nisab in your currency.

Do I pay zakat on my salary?

Not on each salary as it arrives. What remains of it in cash or savings on your zakat date is counted with the rest of your wealth.

Do I pay zakat on gold I wear?

Yes in the Hanafi school; no in the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, as long as it is worn in a normal way. Gold kept as savings is counted by everyone.

Is zakat the same as zakat al-fitr (fitra)?

No. Zakat al-fitr is a small fixed amount per person given before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. Zakat on wealth is 2.5% of what you own.

Can I give zakat before it is due?

Yes. Most scholars allow paying zakat in advance once you have reached the nisab, for example in Ramadan.
