About Surah Az-Zalzalah

Az-Zalzalah, "The Earthquake", is a short surah of eight verses about the Day of Judgement: the earth will be shaken with its final quake, throw out its burdens and tell its news, and people will come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds. It ends with two verses that the Prophet ﷺ called unique and all-embracing.

Main themes

Virtues and when it is recited

Asked about a matter not mentioned in revelation, the Prophet ﷺ answered with its last two verses, calling them "the unique, all-embracing verse": "Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2371). A narration in at-Tirmidhi that it equals half the Qur'an is graded weak.
