Al-Masad, "The Palm Fibre", also called Al-Lahab, is a Meccan surah of five verses about Abu Lahab, the Prophet's ﷺ uncle, and his wife. When the Prophet ﷺ called Quraysh together on the hill of As-Safa and warned them, Abu Lahab said: "May you perish! Is this why you gathered us?" — and the surah was revealed (Sahih al-Bukhari 4971, Sahih Muslim 208).
The surah announced, during Abu Lahab's lifetime, that he would die without faith — and so it happened, which scholars count among the signs of the Qur'an's truth. Reciting it, like all of the Qur'an, brings ten good deeds for every letter (at-Tirmidhi 2910).
