Al-Fatihah, "The Opening", is the first surah of the Qur'an and the one Muslims recite most: it is read in every unit (rak'ah) of every prayer. It is also called Umm al-Kitab (the Mother of the Book) and As-Sab' al-Mathani, "the seven oft-repeated verses" (Qur'an 15:87). In seven short verses it praises Allah ﷻ, affirms that He alone is worshipped and asked for help, and ends with the prayer for guidance to the straight path.
The Prophet ﷺ called it the greatest surah of the Qur'an (Sahih al-Bukhari 4474) and said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book" (Sahih al-Bukhari 756, Sahih Muslim 394).
