Key Islamic Dates Around Eid al-Adha 2026

~18 May 2026

Start of Dhul Hijjah — the holy month of Hajj. The first 10 days are among the most virtuous in the Islamic year.

Yawm Arafah (Day of Arafah)

26 May 2026 — 9 Dhul Hijjah

The most important day of Hajj. Pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafah. Non-pilgrims are encouraged to fast — it expiates sins of the previous and coming year.

Eid al-Adha — 10 Dhul Hijjah

27 May 2026 (Wednesday)

Eid prayer in the morning, followed by the Udhiyah (Qurbani) sacrifice. A day of gratitude, generosity, and family celebration.

Ayyam al-Tashreeq

28–30 May 2026 — 11–13 Dhul Hijjah

The three days following Eid al-Adha. Sacrifice may still be performed. Pilgrims complete the ritual stoning at Mina.

What is Eid al-Adha? — The Feast of Sacrifice

Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى — "Festival of Sacrifice") is the holiest and most significant Islamic celebration. It is observed on 10 Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the climax of the annual Hajj pilgrimage — one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Story of Ibrahim (AS)

The holiday commemorates the moment when Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (Ishmael) as a test of his faith. At the moment of sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram, sparing his life and honoring Ibrahim's absolute devotion. This story is shared across Islam, Christianity, and Judaism — a universal testament to faith and submission to God.

How is Eid al-Adha Celebrated?

  • Eid Prayer (Salat al-Eid): Special congregational prayer performed in the morning, typically in an open field or large mosque.
  • Udhiyah / Qurbani: Ritual slaughter of a livestock animal — sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat is divided: ⅓ for the family, ⅓ for relatives, ⅓ for the poor.
  • Takbeer: Muslims recite "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallahu, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd" from Fajr on the Day of Arafah until Asr on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah.
  • Family & Community: Visiting family, exchanging greetings ("Eid Mubarak!" / "Bayramınız Mübarek!" / "Eid Mubarak ho!"), giving gifts, and sharing meals.
  • Charity: Giving to those in need, especially through Zakat al-Adha and Sadaqah.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected on Wednesday, 27 May 2026 — 10 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH. The exact date is confirmed after the official moon sighting of Dhul Hijjah and may differ by ±1 day in some countries.

"Bakrid" is derived from the Urdu/Persian word "Baqar Eid" — baqar meaning cow. In South Asian tradition, cattle are commonly sacrificed on this day. Bakrid 2026 in India and Bangladesh is expected on 28 May 2026, pending local moon sighting.

Kurban Bayramı (Turkish) literally means "Festival of Sacrifice" — the direct translation of Eid al-Adha. In Turkey, Kurban Bayram 2026 falls on 27 May 2026 with a 4-day public holiday running from 26–29 May 2026. The day before Eid (the Day of Arafah) is called "Arefe" in Turkey and is also observed solemnly.

Yes — for non-pilgrims, fasting on Yawm Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah, expected 26 May 2026) is highly recommended. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year." Note: It is forbidden to fast on Eid al-Adha itself (27 May).

Qurbani is wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi school for every adult Muslim who possesses wealth at or above the Nisab threshold (the same threshold as Zakat). According to Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, it is a Sunnah Mu'akkadah (highly emphasised practice). One sheep/goat covers one household; one cow or camel may be shared among seven people.

No — for a person who intends to perform Qurbani, it is prohibited (according to a sahih hadith) to cut hair or nails from the sighting of Dhul Hijjah (approximately 18 May 2026) until after the sacrifice has been performed on Eid day.

Eid al-Fitr ("Festival of Breaking the Fast") marks the end of Ramadan and comes with Zakat al-Fitr (charity). Eid al-Adha ("Festival of Sacrifice") falls 70 days later on 10 Dhul Hijjah and is considered the greater Eid. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice, coincides with Hajj, and involves Qurbani rather than fasting as its primary act.

The start of Dhul Hijjah — and therefore the date of Eid al-Adha — is determined by the sighting of the Hilal (crescent moon). Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court announcement is followed by most Gulf states and many Muslim communities worldwide. Other countries (UK, USA, Canada, parts of Europe) may follow their own local sighting committees or use astronomical calculation, potentially resulting in a 1-day difference.

The Takbeer of Eid al-Adha (Takbeer Tashreeq) should be recited aloud after every obligatory prayer from Fajr on the Day of Arafah (26 May) until Asr on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah (30 May 2026):

اللهُ أَكْبَر اللهُ أَكْبَر لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ أَكْبَر اللهُ أَكْبَر وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْد

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallahu, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd."

All dates are based on astronomical calculation and expected moon sighting. Actual dates may vary by ±1 day depending on official moon sighting announcements in your country. Always confirm with your local Islamic authority or mosque.
