The 99 Names of Allah

Allah ﷻ has the most beautiful names, and the Qur'an commands us to call upon Him by them (7:180). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677).

The list of 99 names used here is the well-known one narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3507). Scholars note that the listing itself is not firmly traced to the Prophet ﷺ and that lists differ slightly, while the number 99 and the virtue are authentic.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 99 names of Allah?

They are the names by which Allah ﷻ describes Himself in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, such as Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), Al-Malik (the King) and Al-Ghafur (the All-Forgiving). The Qur'an says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them" (7:180).

Is the list of 99 names authentic?

The hadith that Allah ﷻ has 99 names and that whoever enumerates them enters Paradise is authentic (al-Bukhari 2736, Muslim 2677). The well-known list itself comes from a narration in at-Tirmidhi (3507), which many scholars consider weak in its listing; lists differ slightly. This page follows the well-known list that most Muslims learn.

What does "whoever enumerates them" mean?

Scholars explain that it means to learn the names, understand their meanings, call upon Allah ﷻ by them in prayer and let them shape one's life — not only to recite them.

How can I learn the 99 names by heart?

Learn ten names at a time: read the Arabic, the transliteration and the meaning, then test yourself. The “Learn by heart” view on this page has cards and a short quiz for every group and remembers your progress.

Can I print the 99 names?

Yes. You can print a decorative A3 poster for framing in three colours or an A4 study sheet with the meanings, or save either as a PDF.
